If your SRD appeal status shows “pending,” the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals has not yet finalised its decision for that month.

A pending appeal does not mean that the appeal has failed. It means that the information relevant to the disputed month may still be under review.

Who Reviews an SRD Appeal?

SASSA makes the original monthly SRD decision. When an applicant disagrees with a declined decision and submits an appeal, the appeal is considered by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals, commonly referred to as ITSAA.

The Tribunal reassesses the decision using the information available for the relevant month. This may include information from databases used to assess income, employment, financial support and other eligibility requirements.

How Long Can an SRD Appeal Take?

The official appeal platform states that the Independent Tribunal will endeavour to finalise an SRD appeal within 60 to 90 days from the date it receives the appeal.

This is an expected processing period rather than a promise that every appeal will be completed on the same day.

Count the waiting period from the date the appeal was successfully lodged—not from the original date on which SASSA declined the application.

Why an Appeal May Still Be Pending

1. The Review Is Still Within the Processing Period

If fewer than 60 to 90 days have passed since the appeal was lodged, the Tribunal may still be completing its review.

2. Information Is Being Rechecked

The Tribunal may revalidate information used in SASSA’s original assessment. This can include databases that may indicate income, employment or other financial assistance.

3. Different Months Are Being Considered Separately
SRD eligibility is assessed monthly. An appeal for one declined month is separate from an appeal for another month.

One month may therefore have an outcome while another month remains pending.

4. Contact Information May Need Attention

The appeal platform uses the applicant’s registered cellphone number for access and electronic communication.

If the number is incorrect, inactive or unavailable, the applicant may not receive the outcome or an instruction requiring attention.

5. The Appeal May Not Have Been Successfully Submitted

Beginning the online process does not always mean that the appeal was completed.

Check whether the platform displayed a confirmation that the appeal was submitted successfully. If no appeal appears for the relevant month, it may not have been lodged.

How to Check Your Appeal Status

  1. Begin at the official SRD website: https://srd.sassa.gov.za.

  2. Select the official appeal option.

  3. Open the Department of Social Development’s appeal platform.

  4. Enter your South African ID number.

  5. Enter the cellphone number used for the application.

  6. Complete the security process when prompted.

  7. Check the status of each month separately.

  8. Save a screenshot or record of the result for your own reference.

Do not use a third-party website that asks you to enter sensitive information to check an appeal.

Check Each Declined Month Separately

An appeal must be lodged for every declined month that you dispute.

For example, if May, June and July were declined, submitting an appeal for May does not automatically cover June and July. Each month can have:

  • A separate appeal submission.

  • A separate pending status.

  • A separate outcome.

  • A different completion date.

Review the appeal history carefully to confirm that every intended month appears.

What to Do While the Appeal Is Pending

  • Keep the registered cellphone number active.

  • Check the official appeal platform periodically.

  • Save the original appeal confirmation.

  • Do not submit repeated appeals for the same month unless the official platform instructs you to do so.

  • Do not repeatedly change correct contact or banking information.

  • Keep any relevant records safely for your own reference.

  • Ignore anyone claiming they can speed up the Tribunal’s decision.

There is no legitimate paid service that can guarantee a faster or successful appeal.

What Happens If the Appeal Is Successful?

If the Tribunal finds in your favour, it will direct SASSA to initiate payment for the specific month covered by the appeal.

A successful appeal does not necessarily mean that the payment will appear immediately. SASSA may still need to complete payment processing and confirm suitable payment information.

A successful result for one month also does not automatically change the outcome for other months.

What Happens If the Appeal Is Unsuccessful?

If the Tribunal confirms SASSA’s original decision, the appeal for that month will not result in an SRD payment.

The official appeal guidance states that the Independent Tribunal’s decision is the final internal decision. A person who remains dissatisfied may seek judicial review through the courts, subject to the applicable legal requirements.

Court proceedings can involve costs and strict procedures. Consider obtaining independent legal assistance before pursuing that route.

When to Contact the Department of Social Development

Contact the Independent Tribunal if:

  • More than 90 days have passed since the appeal was received.

  • The appeal does not appear on the official platform.

  • You cannot check the status using the correct information.

  • Your contact details prevent you from receiving the outcome.

  • The system displays an error that does not resolve.

  • You need clarification about an appeal already lodged.

Have your ID number and relevant appeal information available, but never email an OTP, bank PIN or online-banking password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “appeal pending” mean the appeal was rejected?

No. It means that the Tribunal has not yet finalised the outcome.

Should I lodge the same appeal again?

Not if the official platform shows that the appeal for that month is already pending. Duplicate submissions do not guarantee faster processing.

Can I appeal several declined months together?

Each declined month that you dispute requires its own appeal.

How will I receive the outcome?

The Tribunal states that applicants are informed electronically. Keep your registered cellphone number active and check the official platform.

Does a successful appeal guarantee immediate payment?

No. A successful outcome directs SASSA to initiate payment for the relevant month, but payment processing may still be required.

Can someone speed up my appeal for a fee?

No. Do not pay anyone who promises to influence or accelerate the Tribunal’s decision.
