Identity Verification Failed: What It Means and What to Do
Learn why SRD identity verification may fail, how to check your personal details, and where to get official SASSA assistance.

If your SRD status shows “Identity Verification Failed” or asks you to complete identity verification, SASSA may not have been able to confirm that your personal information belongs to the correct applicant.
Identity verification helps prevent fraudulent applications and ensures that grant payments go to the right person. A verification problem does not necessarily mean that you will never qualify, but you must follow the official instructions to resolve it.
What Is SRD Identity Verification?
SASSA checks applicants’ identity information against official records. In some cases, an applicant may also be asked to complete biometric identity verification.
Biometric verification can involve confirming your identity using a secure link and a photograph of your face. The information is used to check that the person completing the process is the genuine applicant.
Only use instructions received through an official SASSA channel. Never send a photograph of your ID or face to an unknown WhatsApp number, social-media account or unofficial website.
Why Identity Verification May Fail
1. Your Names Do Not Match Home Affairs Records
The names and surname supplied in the SRD application should correspond with the information registered with the Department of Home Affairs.
Differences involving spelling, surname changes, omitted names or incorrect information may prevent a successful match.
2. Incorrect ID Information
An incorrectly entered ID number can cause the identity check to fail. Check all 13 digits carefully and make sure you are using your own valid South African identity information.
3. The Verification Link Was Not Completed
SASSA may send a secure verification link to the cellphone number connected to the application. If the required process is not completed within the period stated in the message, the verification may remain incomplete.
Follow official instructions promptly, but first confirm that the message and link are genuine.
4. The Photograph Could Not Be Verified
A biometric check may be unsuccessful when the image is unclear or the system cannot complete the match.
Possible practical problems include poor lighting, an obstructed face, an unclear camera image or an interrupted connection.
5. Cellphone Number Problems
The verification instructions may be sent to the cellphone number registered with the SRD application. You may not receive or complete the process if that number is inactive, incorrect or no longer accessible.
SASSA has advised applicants to use cellphone numbers registered in their own names.
6. A Possible Fraud Risk Was Identified
SASSA may require additional verification when its systems detect information associated with possible fraudulent activity.
If you see a “referred” status rather than an ordinary identity-verification message, contact SASSA directly for guidance.
What to Check Before Trying Again
Before completing identity verification:
Confirm that your ID number is correct.
Check that your names and surname match your Home Affairs records.
Make sure you can access the cellphone number registered with the application.
Use the official SRD website at https://srd.sassa.gov.za.
Read the instructions carefully before starting.
Use a device with a working camera if biometric verification is requested.
Choose a well-lit location and ensure that your face is clearly visible.
Keep a stable internet connection until the process is complete.
Save any confirmation message or reference supplied after completion.
Do not repeatedly submit different personal information. If your official records are incorrect, use the appropriate official process to correct them.
How to Complete Verification Safely
Begin from the official SRD website or an official SASSA instruction.
Check the website address carefully before entering personal information.
Complete the verification yourself whenever possible.
Do not allow a stranger to keep copies of your ID, photograph or OTP.
Never pay someone to complete biometric verification.
Do not share a secure verification link publicly.
If you need help, use an official SASSA office rather than an unknown online “agent.”
What If You Do Not Have a Smartphone or Data?
SASSA confirmed in January 2026 that SRD beneficiaries who do not have a smartphone, laptop or sufficient internet access can visit a local SASSA office for assistance with biometric identity verification.
SASSA offices may provide access to official equipment or connectivity for beneficiaries who need help completing the process.
Take your valid identity document with you. Do not pay an unofficial person to provide access to the verification system.
Identity Verification Versus Banking Verification
These are different checks:
Identity verification confirms who you are.
Banking verification confirms that the selected payment account belongs to you.
Eligibility assessment determines whether you meet the SRD requirements for the relevant month.
Correct banking details will not resolve a personal-information mismatch, and completing identity verification does not automatically create a payment date.
When to Contact SASSA
Contact SASSA if:
You cannot access the registered cellphone number.
Your correct identity information continues to fail.
You did not receive the expected verification instructions.
Your status shows “referred.”
You suspect that someone used your ID number fraudulently.
Your personal information was changed without permission.
You do not have suitable technology to complete biometric verification.
Use the toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 or visit a local SASSA office.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does identity verification failed mean my application is declined?
Not necessarily. It means that the identity check was not completed successfully. Follow the official instructions or contact SASSA for assistance.
Can someone complete the verification for me?
A trusted person may help you understand the process, but you should retain control of your ID, cellphone, photograph and OTP. Never use an unknown online agent.
Should I pay for biometric verification?
No. Do not pay anyone who promises to complete or speed up the verification.
What if my names are wrong?
Compare the application information with your Home Affairs records. If the official record itself needs correction, follow the appropriate Home Affairs process.
Can a SASSA office help me?
Yes. SASSA confirmed that local offices can assist beneficiaries who lack the necessary device, data or connectivity.
